PATIENT INFORMATION

WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR COLONOSCOPY WHEN I HAVE NO SYMPTOMS?

The key message that the public needs to understand is that polyps at the early stages are almost always not associated with any symptoms at all. There will not be any abdominal pain, no alteration of bowel habits or even noticeable bleeding.

WHAT IS COLONOSCOPY?

Colonoscopy is a test that enables your surgeon to look at the inner lining of your large intestine (rectum and colon). A flexible fibre optic endoscope, called a colonoscope, is inserted through the anus to look for ulcers, polyps, tumors or areas of inflammation or bleeding. Find out more about this procedure and how CCA help you to schedule one.

Watch and find out how the colonoscopy experience is like.

WHAT IS AN ANAL FISTULA?

An anal fistula is a small channel that can develop between the anal canal and the skin near the anus. It is estimated that between one in every four people with an anal abscess will develop a fistula.

WHAT ARE POLYPS?

A colon polyp is a small clump of cells that forms on the lining of the colon. Over time, some of these polyps may develop into colon cancer, which is often fatal when found in its later stages.

Anyone can develop colon polyps. You are at higher risk if you are 50 or older, are overweight and/or smoke, or have a personal or family history of colon polyps or colon cancer.

Colon polyps often do not cause symptoms. It is important to have regular screening tests, such as colonoscopy, because colon polyps found in the early stages can be removed safely and completely. The best prevention for colon cancer is regular screening for polyps and successful and complete removal of them.

WHAT IS COLORECTAL CANCER?

Colorectal Cancer is the most common cancer in males and second to breast cancer in females in Singapore. More worrying is the rising trend not just in Singapore, but also in surrounding countries in Asia.

WHAT CAUSES ANAL FISSURE?

Anal fissures are caused primarily by trauma; anything that can irritate or cause lacerations to the inner lining of the anus. (E.g. Hard stools). However, there are other non-traumatic causes such as diarrhea or inflammation of the anal canal.

COLON AND RECTAL CANCER

Colon and rectal cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in females worldwide. In males, it is ranked number three.

WHAT ARE HAEMORRHOIDS?

Haemorrhoids are also known as piles. Although they can be unpleasant and painful, they can be easily treated and are very preventable.

Hemorrhoids can occur both internally inside the anus and externally, under the skin of the anus.

Haemorrhoids are most common among adults aged 45-65. However, this does not mean that young people and children do not get them.

Women often develop them during pregnancy.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF IBS?

  • Abdominal cramps.
  • Irregular bowel habit; Patients can suffer from constipation or even diarrhea.
  • Urgency; the feeling of urgently needing to clear the bowels.
  • Abdominal bloating and excessive wind; Tummy feels swollen making clothes feel tight.

*BLEEDING is not a symptom of IBS and you should see your doctor as soon as possible if this happens.
